Got Holiday Fever? I Got A Few Tips.

Posted by Hitroki Tabari on November 25th, 2008

Hello fellow drinkers, I’ve been sulking away in the retail slums for a while and I even recovered from a Star Wars kick dating back to Halloween. I’m back though, in the pub just in time for black Friday, for some sound advice at buying all these games that are out now.  While your compile your holiday list for this years gaming Christmas, here are some things to consider.  First, buy games that your friends are playing over the holiday school vacations and regular vacations so they align perfectly this time of year. This way, many a gamer can take their online systems on the road with them. Gears of War’s horde mode is a sure fire stress reliever for annoying relatives.

Second, buy titles that your heart truly desires, don’t fall into the trap of “WHAT EVERYONE IS PLAYING”, and go with you favorite series or genre whatever it may be. Don’t forget some games you may have passed over last year, one $60.00 game could get you two or three older games this holiday. I recommend some older games like games like Uncharted and Devil May Cry 4, which are great games for those long winter nights.

Finally, I know that its hard to resist some great piece of software that is screaming to come home with you, but you shouldn’t buy them now, instead wait until January-Summer 09 to buy them.  The economic downturn is in play now, and while games have been resistant to the trend of belt tightening.  Recent staff reductions are going to affect gaming as you know it, and you also have to consider that this year there are no Metal Gear 4 (Unless you talk about the 360 version coming in 09) or GTA 4 coming out this spring to tide you over the summer.  Waiting to buy a time consuming title like Fallout 3 or Fable 2 is a most wise usage of your spending dollar.

Until next time, cheers!!

Peggle (sleepless) Nights, PC Game Review

Posted by BDazzler on November 23rd, 2008

Are you looking for an addictive, stupid, but totally fun time waster for your PC?  This may be what the insomniac is looking for.

I have only heard about Peggle (the first one), so I can’t really speak on differences or improvements, but I can say that Peggle Nights seems to play much like what I’ve heard the first Peggle was like.  It’s like an acid rainbow trip, with unicorns while on the Prices Right, playing Plinko.

First off, the basics of the game play, boils down to shooting a ball from the top of the screen, hitting as many objects as you can by bouncing off of them and making them disappear.  You start with a set number of balls with the opportunity to earn more as the level progresses.  If you remove (hit) all the reddish-orange objects before you run out of balls, you pass that level.  There are bonuses for the challenge hungry if you clear the entire screen of all objects.  Each level is run by a psychedelic animal of some sort which translates to the green objects having a different ‘magic’ power than other levels.  The powers vary, but a couple of examples would be your ball splitting into 2 balls when a green object is hit, or the ball rematerialized at the top of the screen for a second chance or even obtaining crab claws as pinball flippers to help keep the ball in play.

There is a basket at the bottom of the screen that moves back and forth and can catch the ball for reuse.  Hitting the basket appears to be just blind luck to me, but perhaps the physics and proper angles and timing can be worked out by someone more adept than me.

There are 60 boards for play, and the “Adventure Mode” really isn’t very hard, but the “Challenge Mode” has some devilishly tricky objectives.  This should extend the play to a more than satisfactory length.  As silly as this game is, I can’t deny the total, mind-numbing fun.  The best part, for me, was the overly exciting celebration and slow motion fireworks for completing a level.  It’s utterly ridicules, but it just feels so damn good.  Pop Cap has made another hit.  It is most certainly worth a trial version, and maybe even a purchase.

Peggle Nights, from Pop Cap games for the PC gets the Official Gamers Pub ranking of…

Look, even Spidy likes it!

NXE Eve

Posted by BDazzler on November 18th, 2008

Xboxers were snuggled, all out of their beds

while visions of Netflix danced in their heads

The avatars waiting, to be made just like “mii”

Finally I can copy that silly ol’ Wii

The Party system will make our gaming much sweeter

and soon it’ll be here, I’ll send out a Tweeter…

When all of a sudden, an update is ready…

It’s coming to me, the download is steady!

It boots right on up, it’s faster, and quick

I think these damn avatars are making me sick

How did I waste an hour making a ‘Mii’?

I guess they had something with that silly ol’ Wii.

Now on to my friends list, with avatars to see

Do they really look like that? Does mine look like me?

Who cares? I must join a party and play,

Or maybe just fire up Netflix for the day.

Wait, I must get the kids out of bed,

Send them to school, I feel like I’m dead.

Work will suck, but then it’s back home

To check it all out with the Pub guys, Shalom!

JCVD..”Bitches” (As Steve would say!)

NXE + Netflix = Happy

Posted by BDazzler on November 16th, 2008

Gui J and I were lucky enough to get the preview of NXE in the 3rd and last round, meaning we got it about 5½ days early.  Gui J doesn’t have Netflix yet, but I do.  If you have NXE, a gold Xbox Live account and like movies, I think you owe it to at least give Netflix a 2 week free trial.  This has always been my most anticipated feature of NXE, and it hasn’t disappointed me yet.

Not only do you get a good standard def picture, but setting up your “Watch Instantly” queue is easy on the PC.  Playing them via your 360 on your big TV is a much better experience and interface than on your PC (with the exception that you can’t add to your queue, only delete on the 360).  We all know HD is coming to “Watch Instantly”, if you have the bandwidth (I haven’t found it yet, but I’ve heard it’s there).

I must now make a “Watch Instantly” recommendation for Pub listeners.  It’s a History Channel documentary from 2006 called “Empires of Industry: Brewed in America”.

Here’s the text rundown… “While the brewing of beer isn’t the oldest profession, it certainly ranks up there when it comes to activities that have withstood the test of time. Tracing the roots of American breweries all the way back to the days of the Puritans, this thirst-quenching A&E program chronicles the growth of a multimillion dollar industry, including behind-the-scenes views of big-name brew houses such as Anheuser-Busch, Yuengling, Pabst and Coors.”

Add this to your instant queue, watch it, and leave us some comments about what you learned.  I have yet to watch it, so I’ll do the same.  If they ever add the feature to watch movies in a party, this will be a Pub community night for sure.
